As an investigation began into the cause of Thursday's deadly plane crash in Barrow County, a Gwinnett County man and his nephew were identified as the victims.

Shannon Ewing of Dacula and his nephew, Henry Ewing of Jones County, were killed in the crash, Channel 2 Action News reported.

Shannon Ewing was flying the plane, Capt. Ryan Sears of the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office said.

The probe into the crash is in its early stages, National Transportation Safety Board spokesman Terry Williams said Friday.

The men were killed when the single-engine, Beech C23 crashed at the end of the runway at the Winder airport, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

The probe will include documenting such things as how the aircraft came to a stop, Williams said. Also, pilot and maintenance records will be examined.

A preliminary report will be issued in about a week, and the full investigation could take a year to complete.

Officials did not know whether the plane was taking off or landing when it crashed, Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said.

Authorities think the crash happened between noon and 2 p.m., when the 911 call was made.

Firefighters arrived first, found the crashed plane in the woods off the property and put out a small fire on the four-passenger plane, Barrow County fire Capt. Scott Dankin said.
