The Atlanta Police Department is inviting the public to participate in its second LGBT Citizens Police Academy.

The four-week program consists of the same kind of information presented in a “traditional citizens police academy,” such as homicide, human trafficking and use of force information, but the topics will be accompanied by conversations on the challenges faced by the LGBT community, according to the department.

The program is intended to strengthen relationships with people who can “become more empowered to help us improve public safety in their neighborhoods,” said Senior Police Officer Eric King.

“Atlanta has a rich and diverse LGBT community and we want members of that community to feel comfortable when communicating with police,” King said in a statement.

Apply by contacting Elizabeth Espy at 404-546-2541 or enespy@atlantaga.gov to request an application before the Oct. 31 deadline. Classes begin Nov. 7 and will be held Wednesdays from 6 to 9 p.m. at both the Atlanta Police Training Academy, 180 Southside Industrial Parkway and the Public Safety Headquarters, 226 Peachtree St. SW.

Potential candidates must be metro Atlanta residents, at least 21 years old and free of felony convictions or misdemeanors within one year of the application. The first program was held April 17 and 18.
