Atlanta man drowns trying to rescue family members on Florida beach

An Atlanta man drowned Monday afternoon while trying to save two of his family members at a Florida beach, authorities said.

According to multiple media reports, 55-year-old Thanh Nguyen was vacationing on Clearwater Beach when he saw his niece and son struggling in the water about 2:30 p.m.

He ran in to help them, but began struggling himself, Tampa-based WFLA-TV reported.

Lifeguards located Nguyen floating in the water and attempted CPR until medics arrived at the beach. He was rushed Morton Plant Hospital, but was pronounced dead about an hour later, the news station reported.
