When an off-duty Brookhaven police officer pulled over Isaiah Gresham on Saturday night, the driver explained he'd gotten lost while delivering Uber Eats.

It soon became clear that wasn't the case.

Gresham’s story changed a few other times before he finally admitted he was stealing packages from homes in a Coosawattee Drive neighborhood.

Brookhaven police Sgt. Charles McCoy was headed home about 7 p.m. Saturday when he saw Gresham running from a front porch with a package in his hand. Soon after, McCoy pulled Gresham over in his white Ford Focus and called for backup, according to the police report obtained by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Gresham initially told police he and a passenger were “doing Uber Eats” and had just dropped off an order and were trying to find the correct address to another delivery.

Police then questioned Gresham about the packages, which he said were from some relatives, according to the report. Police checked the addresses listed on the packages and realized they matched some of those in the area.

Officers detained and handcuffed Gresham after he lied about a name on one of the packages being a relative.

Soon after, he admitted to stealing the packages.

“Thanks to Sgt. McCoy’s awareness and quick action, along with the other officers who responded in support, we were able to get another criminal off the streets and prevent several Christmas holidays from being ruined by thieves,” Police Chief Gary Yandura said in a statement. “It’s also a reminder that everyone is vulnerable to thefts this time of year, so be alert, take precautions, and if you see something, say something.”

Gresham, 20, of Marietta, remained in the DeKalb County Jail Monday on loitering, driving without a suspended license and multiple misdemeanor theft charges.
