Scott Walker entered the mortgage industry by chance. But, after years of hard work, he developed a passion for helping veterans find a way to buy a home.

“Because he had such as tremendous background, a lot of people wouldn’t have done what he did for them,” said his mother, Ann Walker. “He really pushed to get things done for them. He just loved it. He felt like he really made a difference.”

Patti Walker said her husband was a caring individual, but not the type of person who would wear his heart on his sleeve.

One day when he was sick at work, “his mom was coming to pick him up,” Patti Walker said. “He was sitting in the lobby waiting for her and he helped two veterans with something they were having trouble with, and he took care of it for them.”

Jimmy Scott Walker Jr., 50, died Thursday at Gwinnett Medical Center from complications of liver disease. A memorial gathering will be held Sunday at 2 p.m., at the Snellville United Methodist Church. Tom M. Wages Funeral Service, LLC, handled the cremation and the Snellville chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Walker graduated from Emory University in 1985 with a degree in psychology. Walker’s talent was easy to spot during his 28-year career as a mortgage professional, said former co-worker and eventual business partner Sam Lochamy.

“We recognized right away that he was somebody we could put in charge of certain systems and he mastered those things very quickly,” Lochamy said. “A lot of things I think that I got credit for was because of his hard work.”

During the last three years of his career, he focused on helping veterans and was hired as a loan specialist by the Veterans Administration.

Patti also worked at the VA.

“The mortgage business is very volatile,” she said. “There was a time when we wouldn’t even have considered working for the federal government, but we found it to be a very rewarding job.”

Other than his wife, Walker is survived by his son, Jason Walker; his daughter, Ellie Walker; his parents, Jimmy and Ann Walker; his brother, Billy Walker, all of Grayson.
