Johns Creek and Roswell will be collecting unwanted or expired prescription drugs Saturday.

It’s part of National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day.

In Johns Creek, officer M.D. Meberg said turning in drugs can help save lives.

"We're seeing a frightening surge in heroin abuse in Johns Creek and a lot of that gets started from people abusing pain medication," Meberg said. "This is a way for people to get rid of old or expired medications so they're not sitting in a cabinet for some family member to get ahold of and start on that dark road to addiction."

Flushing such drugs can be a health hazard, Roswell officers said. Additionally, accidental poisonings and overdoses are up.

To turn in drugs Saturday, take them to the Roswell Recycling Center at 11570 Maxwell Rd. in Alpharetta or the Target at 5950 State Bridge Road in Johns Creek between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
