Cellphones are now digital appendages for most students, presenting a dilemma for schools and colleges.

The phones have become so integral to students that they take them everywhere and check them constantly. That has proven a challenge to teachers in the classroom, but one Atlanta college instructor came up with a solution. He awards students extra credit points if they turn in their phones at the start of class to keep them focused.

Writing today in the AJC Get Schooled blog, the instructor says students believe they can multitask — pay attention to both the teacher in front of the room and their beeping phones.
