Student test results will play a smaller role in the evaluations of Georgia teachers and other public school educators if the state board of education approves a new rule after a hearing Thursday.

The board will hold a public hearing on rule 160-5-1-.37, which implements legislation passed by the General Assembly this spring. Senate Bill 364 reduces the weight of test-based student growth in the evaluations of teachers and school leaders.

Test results currently comprise half of each teacher evaluation and 70 percent of each leader’s evaluation. Under SB 364, that drops to 30 percent for teachers and 40 percent for school leaders.

The legislation and resulting rule change call for other changes, such as fewer classroom observations and new measures of growth for certain teachers and additional measures for evaluating leaders, such as school climate.

The meeting starts at 8 a.m. with the hearing expected to start at 9:30 a.m.. It’ll be on the 20th floor of the east tower at 205 Jesse Hill Jr. Dr. SE in downtown Atlanta.
