Although she understands the need for peaceful protests, South Gwinnett High School Principal Dorothy Jarrett said the demonstration won’t be meeting at her school.
Jarrett sent out a letter to the community Wednesday afternoon clarifying erroneous information that called for marchers to meet at the school parking lot in advance of an event set for 5 p.m. Thursday.
“Information about this protest has indicated that the event will start in the bus lanes of our school and proceed to City Hall. Please know that our campus will be closed Thursday afternoon and will not be a meeting place for those participating in this event,” she wrote. “It is my understanding that in response to safety concerns related to crossing Highway 78, city officials are encouraging those who participate to meet at City Hall and in the Town Green.

But the logistics haven’t been worked out yet and the entire event is being postponed, according to city spokesman Brian Arrington.
“We appreciate any group’s right to protest, but we want it done in a safe manner,” he said. “South Gwinnett High is actually on the other side of the street and we can’t shut down a federal highway.”
Anyone who has driven along the that thoroughfare can attest to the high traffic volume.
Arrington added that the city is eager to work with anyone who wants to conduct a rally or demonstration.
“We just heard about it through social media,” he said.
Jarrett echoed a similar sentiment.
“Please know that my primary concern in sharing this information is the safety and welfare of our students and their families.”
