New results from SAT for class of 2016, Georgia’s top 10

The results of the SAT test for the class of 2016 are out with average scores for two versions of the test, the old and new.

It was a transition year as the College Board implemented a new version of the exam, with some taking the older version and others taking the new one.

Georgia public school students who took the older version scored an average 1459 points, up nine points from 2015, with the biggest increase in math at five points, according to the Georgia Department of Education.

The redesigned SAT is scored by a different system. Some students took that new version after it was introduced in March, scoring a 976 statewide mean, outperforming the national mean of 972. Georgia ranked 36th in the nation on the new version.

A total of 69,922 Georgia students took the old and new versions compared with 1,681,134 nationally. (There was no breakdown immediately available of the number of new versus old test takers in Georgia.) The new version scores students on math and on “evidence-based” reading and writing.

Georgia students also gained on the ACT, the competing college-entrance exam, in results released last month. Fewer Georgians take the ACT, which, unlike the SAT has a science section, but the test is rapidly gaining in popularity with more than 58,000 members of the class of 2016 taking it.

As on the ACT, the top-performing public schools reported on the SAT were in metro Atlanta. The Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science and Technology scored a composite 1870 average, 60 points higher than Northview High in Fulton County. Those schools were the top two, in that order, on the ACT, as well.

The others in the top five on the SAT, in descending order: Johns Creek High in Fulton, Walton High in Cobb County and Alpharetta High, also in Fulton.

Cherokee County had the highest districtwide reported composite average of 1577, six points ahead of Decatur City Schools.
