Morehouse College student leaders present wish list to board
Morehouse College student leaders posted online Friday a list of changes it would like its board of trustees make that it believes will make the school’s operations more transparent and accountable to students and faculty.
The list includes:
- changing term limits for board members from "what appears to be about eight, 3-year limits to three."
- terminate the policy and practice of excluding student and faculty trustees from board decisions.
- address the student body about recent events. The board voted in January not to extend the contract of president John S. Wilson when it ends in June.
The letter also recommends that board agendas should be posted one month before a meeting and a lower percentage of alumni trustees as board officers, committee chairs, executive committee chairs and members of the presidential search committee.
The letter was written in preparation of the board’s monthly meeting, which starts today and concludes Saturday. It was written by all three student board members and two faculty board members.
The board has been under heavy criticism from scores of alumni, students and faculty for its decision not to keep Wilson, excluding student and faculty trustees from the vote on Wilson and what the critics say has been a lack of communication from the board about situation.
