LaGrange College has chosen a familiar name in Georgia education circles to become its new leader.

The middle Georgia college announced Friday it has named Susanna Baxter as its next president. Baxter has been president of the Georgia Independent College Association, an organization that supports the state’s private colleges and universities, for 10 years.

“It is an honor to be joining such a wonderful institution with such a dedicated team,” she said in a statement. “My family and I look forward to becoming part of a vibrant campus community — and the equally vibrant community of LaGrange — sometime this summer.”

Baxter replaces Dan McAlexander, who is retiring after 11 years on the job.

More than 100 applicants were considered for the job. Baxter was dean of students at Barton College in Wilson, N.C. In her role at GICA, Baxter was a frequent presence at the Georgia state Capitol during the legislative session, pushing for policies the organization believed supported its member institutions. LaGrange board members said Baxter’s experience as an education leader on campus and with organizations such as GICA were a major factor in its decision to hire her.

LaGrange College has about 1,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Tuition and fees were about $31,000 this academic year, according to federal data.
