One of the best high schools in Georgia when it comes to test performance is usually the Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science and Technology.
All students there routinely pass the mandatory state End of Course Tests. A new measure of school performance, though, shows that the school has plenty of room to grow.
The median student “growth” percentage in Mathematics II, which covers geometry, algebra and statistics, was 40 percent, below the district median of 48 percent and the state median of 49 percent.
Officials from the Georgia Department of Education say high achievement does not preclude the possibility of high growth.
The results are derived from year-to-year performance on Georgia’s Criterion Referenced Competency Tests and End of Course Tests and are for the 2012-13 school year. Change in a student’s test performance is compared against that of peers who had similar scores in the prior year.
