Gwinnett officials pitch $2 billion school budget plan

March 26, 2016

Gwinnett County school officials made their pitch to school board members Saturday to approve a near $2 billion budget that includes more money for school bus repairs and school property maintenance.

Administrators said they are trying to play catch up after years of lean budgets and state cuts that began in 2009 in the aftermath of the Great Recession.

“We’re beginning to start back, but I want to emphasize beginning,” Superintendent J. Alvin Wilbanks told board members.

The proposed budget includes a 3 percent salary increase for all employees. Most teachers will receive an additional boost in pay. The average teacher’s pay will rise by 3.87 percent, officials said. All employees, including those hired for the 2016-17 school year, will receive a 1 percent bonus.
