Gwinnett County's school system has 29 teacher vacancies, but officials say all classes will have teachers when the fall semester begins Monday.

Officials said they like to have additional certified teachers to fill in, for example, if others have long-term illnesses.

“The vacancies will not prevent classes from being taught,” Gwinnett spokesman Bernard Watson said late Thursday. “We have enough teachers to cover all of our classes, so the vacancies will not effect instruction.”

Gwinnett, the state’s largest school district, hired about 1,200 teachers between last year and this summer. Gwinnett has about 10,000 teachers and expects about 178,000 students this school year.

In addition to looking for new teachers, Gwinnett actively tried to hire additional bus drivers and classroom paraprofessionals.
