A new law bans prohibitions on religious expression on high school athletic uniforms in certain circumstances.

Gov. Nathan Deal signed Senate Bill 309, which prohibits publicly-funded high schools from participating in athletic associations that both prohibit religious symbols on sports uniforms and allow other types of personal expression on them.

The law also bans prohibitions on athletic competitions between public and private schools.

It is aimed at the Georgia High School Association, the biggest association for public school sports.

Companion legislation, House Bill 870, did not pass the General Assembly. Deal signed SB 309 on Tuesday.
