Cherokee high schools rank nationally
U.S. News and World Report has named two Cherokee County high schools as among the best nationally.
Etowah High School and Sequoyah High School earned silver medals under the magazine’s ranking methodology for “Best High Schools in America.”
Sequoyah ranked 1,950 in the U.S., and Etowah was 2,169. The news organization bases its rankings on the results for the 2013-14 school year.
Criteria used to determine the rankings included how schools fared in comparison to others in its state, academic performance of the school’s black, Hispanic and low-income students, its graduation rate and how students performed on Advanced Placement or the International Baccalaureate program.
Out of the 50 states, Georgia ranked 21st nationally according to the percentage of medals earned by public high schools.
