Seventy-four high schoolers participated in the Summer Youth Leadership Institute at Emory University’s Goizueta Business School June 1-6. The week-long program, hosted by 21st Century Leaders, a local non-profit focused on giving high schoolers hands-on leadership experience, improved students’ skills, personal leadership and critical thinking with a focus on business. The students participated in workshops, tours, team-building exercises and round-table discussions with business leaders.

The Barnwell Elementary School fourth grade class, located in Johns Creek, was awarded the 2014 Financially Smart School Award. Along with the award, the school won copies of "Rich 4th Graders," a personal finance ebook that helps students develop financial literacy.

Gwinnett County Public Schools students from Brookwood High, Grayson High, Mill Creek High and Norcross High are part of a group of 1,000 student artists whose art will be on display in New York City at the Art.Write.Now. 2014 National Exhibition after earning high honors as part of the 2014 National Scholastic Art & Writing Awards program. Phu Nguyen, of Norcross High, was awarded a gold medal for her drawing called "City of Atlantis." Savana Ogburn, of Grayson High, won a gold medal for her photograph titled "Tulle Expansions." Silver medals were awarded to Cadie Crow, of Mill Creek High, for her drawing titled "Clowning Around," and Jenna Still, of Brookwood High, for her ceramic and glass piece titled "Fundens Ad Angulum."

Oliver Adlam, from McIntosh High School in Peachtree City, was awarded a $500 college scholarship form Hamilton Relay, a telecommunications relay and captioned telephone service provider. The scholarship is awarded to high school seniors who are deaf, hard of hearing, deaf-blind or have difficulty speaking. Adlam plans on attending Georgia College and State University to study mechanical or electrical engineering.

Students at Sophia Academy, located in Atlanta, were awarded Character Trait awards and Awards of Excellence based on achievement standards set by the school. The Corrigan Family Scholarship Award was given to second grader Kaylee Miles. Sixth grader London Wallace won the Eagle Award, for demonstrating Christian character. Third grader Ashley Felix and sixth grader Steven Peay were both awarded the Eagle Spirit Award.
