A team from The Wesleyan School in Norcross recently won the high school regional competition for the National Science Bowl. The team's coach is Patricia McCoy. Student team members are: Nicolas Poulos, Erin McConnell, Watson Copeland, Sara Carmichael and Reed Thomas. The students will now compete in the national competition in Washington, D.C. in April. The competition is hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science.

Raja Selvakumar of Fulton County's Milton High School and Lillian Chin of The Westminster Schools are among 40 U.S. high school seniors selected as finalists in the 2013 Intel Science Talent Search. More than 1,700 students entered the contest, which encourages them to pursue ambitious scientific questions and develop their problem solving skills. Raja, a black belt in martial arts, developed a fuel cell that runs on microbes in stomach acid. Lillian developed a computer model to analyze cell movement during the wound healing process. Students are judged on their original scientific research and will compete for a week in March in Washington, D.C. for $630,000 in awards. The top winner will receive $100,000 from the Intel Foundation.

Michele Bloomquist, a science teacher at DeKalb Early College Academy in Stone Mountain, has been selected as a fellow for the National Science Teachers Association New Science Teacher Academy. Bloomquist was chosen from hundreds of applicants nationally for this year-long professional development program. She will receive mentoring, web-based professional development and a membership to NSTA. She will also receive a scholarship to the group's convention in San Antonio, Tx.

Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science, and Technology student David Park won fourth place at the Samsung Mobile Boot Camp for top performing high school students interested in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Samsung Mobile collaborated with the University of California, Berkeley, the University of Texas at Dallas, Georgia Institute of Technology, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology to develop activities for the boot camp.
