Bonnie Cook, the late secretary at Pepperell Middle School in Floyd County, was honored Wednesday by Georgia Schools Superintendent John Barge for her 22 years of service to the school.

Cook died on August 25, 2011, in a van fire on her way to Rome for brain cancer treatment. She was widely known and loved at the school, said Pepperell’s principal, Becky McCoy.

“Mrs. Cook knew each student, as well as their parents, by name,” McCoy said. “Mrs. Cook was the warm smile that greeted you when you came through the door, and it was her voice you heard when you called the school.”

Barge presented Cook’s family with the second annual Phillips Award, which was established to honor school staff that had a positive impact on the education and lives of others.
