More Georgia students are choosing to take the ACT college admissions test, likely in part because the SAT rolled out a revamped version this year and kids may have been wary of it.

The good news today is that even though more Georgia students took the ACT this year, scores rose. For the first time in Georgia’s history, the state average ACT score exceeded the national average.

How important are these tests?

Despite more colleges making the ACT and the SAT optional, the tests play a big role in getting into Georgia’s most competitive schools, and the scores required far exceed the state average.

While the average Georgia student scored a 21.1 on the ACT, freshmen starting the University of Georgia this month had ACTs in the middle 50 percent range of 27 to 32. Georgia Tech's range was 30 to 34. The highest score possible on the ACT is a 36.
