After spending more than a year in jail, an 18-year-old came up with a plan to be free. He’d pay a Cobb County deputy to help him escape.

The plan backfired. Now the Atlanta teenager is facing a new list of charges, according to arrest warrants obtained by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Demarco Michael Draughan has been in jail since Oct. 2, 2012, when he was arrested for allegedly leading police on a high-speed chase that ended when he crashed a stolen Acura. Draughan's speed exceeded 110 mph as he disregarded traffic lights and abruptly changed lanes while police pursued him, an arrest warrant states.

After crashing the car, officers found a loaded handgun and marijuana bagged for sale, according to Cobb County police. He was later indicted on numerous felony charges related to the heist.

But last week, three new felony charges were added to Draughan’s docket after he allegedly tried to bribe a Cobb deputy into helping him escape. He asked a deputy in charge of transporting inmates from the jail to the courthouse to help him escape in exchange for cash, which Draughan planned to transfer online, his latest arrest warrant states.

“The accused did offer to get money transferred to Deputy Cardone through Green Dot for Deputy Cardone to aid in his escape,” the arrest warrant states. “The accused stated to Deputy Cardone if he transferred the money through Green Dot it could not be traced.”

Draughan was charged with bribery, escape and criminal solicitation for hatching the failed escape plan, jail records show.

The latest charges come about a month after Draughan was one of nine inmates accused of severely beating another inmate in a possible gang attack, according to the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office.

Draughan remained Friday night in the Cobb County jail, where he was being held without bond.
