As afternoon storms rolled through metro Atlanta and north Georgia, Gordon County once again appeared to take the brunt of the damage Tuesday afternoon.
Several homes near I-75 and Ga. 53, near the Calhoun Premium Outlets, were damaged around 4 p.m., Gordon County Chief Deputy Sheriff Robert L. Paris told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. No injuries were reported and the damaged appeared to be isolated, Paris said.
Ten homes appeared to be damaged, including one that housed an in-home daycare, Richard Cooper, Gordon County EMA director, said Tuesday evening. A group of five or six children was in the basement of the home at the time that storm hit, but all were fine, Cooper said.
The location of Tuesday's damage is about five miles from where the Jan. 30 tornado hit the Sonoraville community, damaging homes and injuring several people. The January tornado traveled nearly a 25-mile path through parts of Bartow and Gordon counties.
Most of the area was under either a severe thunderstorm watch or warning late Tuesday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. Storms were moving in a northeast direction and targeting the Athens area shortly before 6 p.m., according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologists.
Before the afternoon rush hour could get under way, the storm was responsible for temporary power outages in west metro areas due to downed power lines, according to police.
Trees were reported down in some parts of the metro area, including in Cherokee County, where a tree landed on a home on Dr. John T. Pettit Street in Canton. No one was injured, according to Tim Cavender with the Cherokee County fire department.
In Paulding County, a blown transformer brought power lines down, sparking a brush fire and closing U.S. 278 in both directions just west of Dallas.
Snow is possible for extreme north Georgia late Tuesday night, according to Channel 2. Schools in White County, in northeast Georgia, will be delayed by two hours Wednesday.
Windy conditions are expected to continue Wednesday, when high temperatures will remain in the upper 40s. By the end of the week, highs are expected to reach the middle to upper 60s, according to forecasters.
