James Staples of Tucker, deputies said, preferred to be on the run.

When Gwinnett sheriff deputies, U.S. deputy marshals and assorted law officers, tried to arrest him at the Hampton Inn in Lawrenceville Thursday on warrants for relatively minor crimes, the 41-year-old Staples led them on a high-speed chase, said Deputy Shannon Volkodav.

Deputies captured Staples on Oakland Road near Plantation Court in Lawrenceville by performing the Precision Immobilization Technique (P.I.T. maneuver) to bump his car to a stop, Volkodav said. The fugitive tried to run, but was quickly apprehended by sheriff’s deputies, Volkodav said. Staples’ arrest warrants include:

  • two counts of theft by receiving stolen property
  • possession of methamphetamine
  • driving with an open container of alcohol
  • Obstruction of a law officer in performance of duties
  • Fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer
  • State Court judge's warrant

Staples is now in jail, Volkodav said. And not to pile on but she said he can expect more charges after today’s flight.
