A Gainesville woman was arrested on a child cruelty charge Wednesday evening after investigators said she failed to get her young daughter medical treatment for 10 months.

Zaira Zarate, 27, was taken into custody at the Hall County Jail following an investigation into the cruelty allegations that lasted more than a year, sheriff’s office spokesman Derreck Booth said in a news release.

“According to the initial investigation, between January and October of 2019, Zarate failed to provide the victim, 4 at the time, with proper medical treatment,” the sheriff’s office said. “Zarate missed more than 25 doctor’s appointments for the child and a year of physical therapy. The victim also suffered an injury that went untreated.”

Authorities did not elaborate on the child’s medical condition, but said the little girl, now 5, was removed from the home after the investigation began in October 2019. She has been in custody of the Division of Family and Children Services ever since.

“We can’t get into detail on the medical end,” Booth said. “What I can tell you is that she is doing well physically and continues to improve while in DFCS custody.”

No additional details were released and authorities said the case remains under investigation. Zarate remained at the Hall County Jail on Thursday afternoon on $5,700 bond, online records show.
