The waterlogged and weary will find no respite Friday when showers and storms return for the afternoon.

Since the start of this week, between Tropical Depression Fred’s rain bands and a regular pattern of summer storms, Atlanta has recorded more than four inches of rain. This month to date, rainfall totals are nearly three inches above normal levels, according to the National Weather Service.

Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said Friday’s rain will follow a similar pattern as Thursday’s offering, which caused flash flooding in Cobb County and trapped students and staff inside a day care facility. Firefighters rescued all 27 children and four adults from the facility.

On Friday, Monahan said showers and storms will begin firing up after lunchtime.

“Even though the rain chances are high — they are up at 60% today, so we have a good chance of showers and storms — you are still going to have that opportunity to get outside,” he said. “Especially early today.”

Metro Atlanta is dry and warm in the mid-70s to start the day. With the humidity and Thursday’s rain, the city is battling some low cloud cover and fog before sunshine enters the mix, Monahan said.

“Later this afternoon, we’re also going to add the storms,” he said. “... If you’ve got plans this evening, still some rain around after sunset and then tomorrow we’ll see another round of scattered storms.”

Atlanta’s projected high Friday is 86 degrees. Rain chances will drop to 40% Saturday and Sunday, and that will contribute to higher temperatures, according to Channel 2. By Sunday, Atlanta could return to the 90s.

Sunday will be the drier of the two weekend days, Monahan said, and the best bet for outdoor activities.

With dry pavement, there are no early delays on metro Atlanta interstates, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center. All freeways inside the Perimeter were moving at interstate speeds at 7 a.m., the Traffic Center reported.
