A South Florida woman thwarted a carjacker when she kicked, screamed and wrestled a large kitchen knife away from the assailant, the Sun-Sentinel reported.

Heather Valdez, 47, of Boca Raton, told police she was pulling out of the first-floor garage of a Target store in Deerfield Beach on Jan. 18 when she stopped to get some chocolates out of the car, the newspaper reported. When Valdez attempted to re-enter her car, she was confronted by the suspect, who threatened her with a knife, the Sun-Sentinel reported.

Valdez then managed to take the knife away from the man, who ran away and then fled on a bicycle he had stashed in nearby bushes, according to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office. Detectives released a sketch of the man, who had a beard, was about 150 pounds and was between 5 feet 6 inches and 5 feet 10 inches tall, the newspaper reported.

Valdez cut her thumb in the altercation, the Sun-Sentinel reported. She was treated by paramedics at the scene.
