Miramar police attempted a traffic stop near a service area on Florida’s Turnpike, according to spokeswoman Tania Rues, but the driver hit several parked cars and drove away before fleeing his vehicle, the newspaper reported.

Later in the evening, a resident called police to report that a man was drowning in the canal behind his home, WTVJ reported.

Members of the Miramar fire department pulled the body from the canal and took the man to a hospital in Hollywood, where he was identified as the person who had fled from police, WSVN reported.

"The victim was pronounced dead shortly after," Rues told the Sun-Sentinel.
