The first of three people charged in a killing outside a former Marietta bar was convicted Friday, the Cobb County District Attorney's Office said.

Dennis Lee Hampton, 43, of Canton, was convicted of malice murder, felony murder, one count of aggravated assault and two counts of use of a firearm by a convicted felon during the commission of crime, according to DA Vic Reynolds. Hampton was acquitted of a second count of aggravated assault involving a bottle.

Hampton shot and killed Takilam Terrell, 34, of Sandy Springs, on April 7, 2013, after an argument inside Milo’s Bar on Garrison Road.

According to investigators, Terrell was arguing with his girlfriend and as a security guard tried to calm down the two,, Hampton’s cousin, Joseph Ricky Hampton, got involved. That led Dennis Hampton to get involved, and he pulled out a .9 mm handgun and fired a shot that hit Terrell, investigators said.

“He brought a gun to a fistfight,” Deputy Chief ADA Jesse Evans told jurors. “Dennis Hampton executed Takilam Terrell for no reason.”

Dennis Hampton was arrested two days later and booked into the Cobb jail, where he has been held without bond. He faces life in prison without parole, but his sentencing has not yet been scheduled, Reynolds said.

Charges are still pending against Joseph Hampton and his wife, Trina Lesley Chatman, in Terrell’s death. Both remained in the Cobb jail late Friday.
