Michael Freeman, who was recently released from a Tennessee prison, was arrested Thursday after he allegedly beat, strangled and tried to drown the 9-month-old boy, KABC reported.

The child's mother called police after an alleged domestic dispute with Freeman, KTLA reported. The woman claimed Freeman had threatened her and their 7-year-old son, and then grabbed the toddler and fled, the television station reported.

Freeman then allegedly went to a vacant apartment and tried to kill the child, police said. Police used a Taser to stop the attack, KABC reported.

Freeman is being held in lieu of a $1 million bond, the television station reported. The child’s condition was unclear.
