A test run of a 'straddling bus' began in Qinhuangdao, China, this week.
BBC News reported that the Transit Elevated Bus, or TEB, as it is called, is powered by electricity to carry 300 passengers above traffic. It does so by traveling on a rail that is on the shoulders of the road, straddling traffic.
ABC News reported that the bus is 75 feet long and 25 feet wide and could replace 40 regular buses and reduce carbon emissions, according to chief engineer Song Youzhou.
"The TEB has the same functions as the subway, while its cost of construction is less than one-fifth of the subway," engineer Bai Zhiming told China Central Television in May at the China Beijing International High-Tech Expo.
The TEB underwent a test run Tuesday.
