A DeKalb County man pleaded guilty Thursday to federal charges of assaulting a mail carrier.
Michael Terrell, 25, of Decatur, was arrested last year after he drew a gun on a postal employee who delivered a package to a Tucker restaurant, according to U.S. Attorney BJay Pak. At the time of the March 2, 2019, assault, Terrell had already been indicted in Fulton County on charges of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a felony. The indictment stemmed from a 2018 incident, prosecutors said.
The assault at the restaurant started after the mail carrier gave the package to a cashier. According to Pak, Terrell grabbed the package, followed the mail carrier to the postal truck, took the keys and forced his way inside the vehicle. He rummaged through the truck for a large amount of marijuana that was missing from the package, prosecutors said. Not finding anything, Terrell pulled the gun on the mail carrier before taking off from the scene.
“This assault on a representative of the United States Postal Service (USPS) is disturbing and unacceptable,” Atlanta Interim police Chief Rodney Bryant said. “Criminals who would seek to harm public servants and people who seek to use the USPS as a means to traffic drugs must be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.”
Details on a sentencing date for Terrell were not released.
