DeKalb County police Friday identified the officer shot while responding to a Thursday aternoon burglary call in Lithonia as Sgt. Nicole Hines.

Hines, a 23-year-veteran of the force, remained hospitalized in good condition Friday, according to DeKalb police spokeswoman Mekka Parish.

“She took a round to the leg,” Cedric Alexander, the county’s public safety director, told Channel 2 Action News.

The shooting happened in the 5600 block of Cape Cod Lane, near Salem Road.

Hines was transported by ambulance Grady Memorial Hospital, according to Capt. Eric Jackson with the DeKalb fire department.

Atlanta police officers temporarily blocked some intersections near Grady to allow the ambulance quicker access to the hospital.

Three suspects were taken into custody, Alexander said. Officers were searching the area for any additional possible suspects, he said. The suspects’ names were not immediately released.

Interim DeKalb police Chief James Conroy said officers were responding to a burglary in progress at a home when suspects in a car drove through closed garage doors and fired shots at officers.
