A person who was on the MARTA tracks near the Lakewood transit station was hit and killed by a train Thursday night, officials said.

The victim, who was not identified, was struck by the passenger train around 9:30 p.m., MARTA police spokeswoman Sgt. Deneya Littles said. They were later pronounced dead by the Fulton County medical examiner.

The resulting investigation suspended train service at the Lakewood station, causing major delays on the north and south lines for several hours. Riders were forced off trains and onto buses at the East Point and West End stations.

Littles said police do not know why the person was on the tracks, and no further information was released about their death. Police plan to release additional information as it becomes available, according to Littles.

The fatal incident Thursday night was the second death on MARTA tracks this month. On the morning of April 5, 71-year-old Thomas Howard fell from the platform at MARTA’s Midtown station. He was hit by a train and killed.

Atlanta fire officials said they expect a lengthy investigation into Howard’s death. According to Littles, Howard was standing on the granite strip at the edge of the platform, a restricted area where MARTA riders are regularly warned not to stand.
