A driver who took off after an early morning police chase may have been armed, police say.

The chase started about 5 a.m. in Henry County, according to Channel 2 Action News, and Georgia State Patrol officials said there were no updates at 2 p.m.

The man at the wheel was allegedly driving 114 mph when a deputy clocked his speed.

That deputy tried to pull over the speeding car when the driver got off I-75 northbound at Highway 20, Channel 2 reported. But the driver went into an apartment complex and took off when the deputy got out of his patrol car.

The chase continued on I-75 north as Georgia State Patrol troopers got involved in south Fulton County and quickly used a PIT maneuver, which is a controlled crash, and spun the car out safely right before the Cleveland Avenue exit.

Three passengers inside the car were detained, but the driver ran and got away.

GSP spokesman Sgt. Stacey Collins told Channel 2 the passengers were initially with the driver of their own accord.

One of the passengers said they thought the driver had a gun on him, but authorities have not yet released the driver’s name.

Collins said the driver ran into the woods near the highway.
