A man wanted in connection with a 1996 shooting death in Gwinnett County was arrested in Central America, the FBI said.

Hector Ulises Garay, 51, was taken into custody Tuesday in El Salvador, where he was thought to be living, according to the FBI.

Garay is wanted in the death of Adalberto Salines at his home in Norcross on Jan. 21, 1996, officials said. Salines was shot during a robbery attempt.

Ten days later, the FBI obtained a warrant for unlawful flight to avoid prosecution after Garay was thought to have left the country.

He was flown to Atlanta on Tuesday and is being held in the Gwinnett County jail. He’s charged with felony murder, according to jail records.
