Several shots were fired at a Roswell police officer on routine patrol early Friday in the area of Old Roswell Road and Commerce Parkway, police said.
“The officer attempted to stop the vehicle and a short pursuit ensued resulting in the suspect crashing and being taken into custody,” Roswell police Detective Zachary Frommer said.
The chase started just before 1 a.m., cut through a local shopping center and ended shortly after that.
The officer and the suspect were not injured, and no bullets struck struck the officer’s patrol car, Frommer said.
Police initially thought a second person was involved in the shooting.
Alpharetta police, Cobb County police, Cherokee County sheriff’s deputies and an Atlanta police helicopter joined the search for that second person.
But officers later determined only one person — 21-year-old Victor Alonzo Majia Nunez of Riverdale — was in the stolen Ford Expedition at the time of the shooting, Frommer said.
Majia Nunez was taken to the Roswell Detention Center, “where he has been speaking with detectives but his cooperation has been limited,” Frommer said.
It is unclear if the incident is related to the shooting deaths of two black men by police officers in Louisiana and Minnesota.
“Obviously, that’s coming to everyone’s mind, but that’s not clear at this point,” Frommer said.
The recent deaths sparked protests across the country, including one deadly rally in Dallas, Texas, and one that temporarily shut down traffic on the Downtown Connector Thursday in Atlanta.
No other details were released.
