Police: Armored car guard robbed in south Fulton

Police investigating armored truck robbery at BP station

A seemingly unarmed man was able to wrestle a money bag away from an armed guard who shot at the fleeing bandit Tuesday during a south Fulton County armored car robbery.

Police and FBI agents are looking for the suspect who got away with an undisclosed amount of money.

Police arrived on the scene at the BP gas station at 3515 Cascade Road shortly after 1 p.m.

A man had approached the armored car guard leaving the convenient store and snatched the money bag, Fulton County police spokeswoman Cpl. Kay Lester said.

“He motioned for a weapon but he did not present one,” Lester said. “A scuffle ensued between the two ending in shots fired by the guard.”

The bandit fled with the stolen money bag, Lester said, noting the peculiar nature of the incident.

“It is unusual,” she said. “Usually, there is a weapon” during the robbery.

The armored car guard was later put in handcuffs and put into a police vehicle.

“He is going to be cited for reckless conduct,” Lester said, referring to the way the guard fired his weapon at the fleeing thief. “He is being taken in for questioning.”

Police are looking for a black man in a black and white hooded sweatshirt and tan pants driving a gray Nissan Pathfinder with a Missouri license plate that possibly has a window broken or shot out, police said.

Law enforcement officials are reviewing security video footage recorded at the gas station, Lester said.
