A Guatemalan man will spend more than four years in federal prison for trying to smuggle heroin into the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

Last May, Kenneth Lewis Martin was arrested as he went through customs after arriving from Guatemala City, Guatemala, according to court records.

Immigrations and Customs Enforcement agents found 2.5 kilograms of heroin hidden inside some artwork he was transporting, court officials said.

During his 50-month prison term – essentially, four years and two months – Martin, 25, must serve 500 hours of alcohol rehabilitation at the U.S. Board of Prison facility in San Diego, according to court documents. Prison is to be followed by three years of probation, during which time he is to commit to 120 hours of community service.

“Thanks to vigilant Customs and Border Protection agents, this defendant was unable to slip through security with the drugs he concealed in his suitcase,” U.S. Attorney Sally Quillian Yates said.

Martin was convicted in November after he pleaded guilty.
