The man shot last week by Woodstock police was released from the hospital Monday — and promptly taken to jail.

William Candler, 35, was taken into custody following his discharge from WellStar Kennestone Hospital and charged with two counts of aggravated assault against a police officer, Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Jay Baker said. The charges were filed by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, which is investigating the Oct. 28 incident that left Candler wounded.

According to previously released information, Cherokee deputies were dispatched to a suicide threat call at a home on Olde Mill Trace at about 2 a.m. that day. Officers from the Woodstock Police Department were also called to the scene.

Shortly after authorities arrived, Candler’s wife and two children fled the residence. Candler then appeared on the front porch with a rifle, Baker said.

“Police Officers issued verbal commands to drop the weapon,” the GBI later said in an emailed statement. “However, Candler raised the rifle at the officers at which time the officers fired at Candler.”

Candler was rushed to the hospital. No information about the extent of his injuries has been released.

No deputies or police officers were injured.

Candler is being held without bond at the Cherokee Adult Detention Center, Baker said Tuesday.
