A man was shot in southwest Atlanta on Wednesday morning after he arrived at a meetup with a woman his friend contacted online, police said.

The victim, whose name was not released, told police his friend had arranged on social media to meet the woman at a home in the 700 block of Pegg Road.

For reasons unknown, the victim accompanied his friend. When they arrived at the meetup early Wednesday, they saw that the house “appeared to be unoccupied,” Atlanta police spokesman Jarius Daugherty told AJC.com.

Police did not offer any further details on the purpose of the meetup.

“As they were preparing to leave, a black sedan approached them and started to fire at the victim’s vehicle,” Daugherty said in a statement.

The victim quickly drove off, but he realized soon after he was shot multiple times in the legs. They headed to Grady Memorial Hospital and contacted police, who met them at the hospital about 2 a.m.

It is not clear why the shooter in the black sedan opened fire.

The incident remains under investigation, Daugherty said.
