A Gwinnett County roofer was arrested after a state investigation found he defrauded several insurance companies out of more than $1 million dollars in workers’ compensation premiums, a state enforcement division representative said Tuesday.
Pedro Henriquez, 37, was arrested April 4 and charged with two felony counts of insurance fraud, one felony count of conspiracy to commit a crime and one count of failing to provide workers’ compensation insurance for his employees.
Although Henriquez lives in Gwinnett County, he and his crew traveled to Albany and Leesburg areas each week to perform roof work, according to the Georgia State Board of Workers’ Compensation’s Enforcement Division that investigated Henriquez.
Henriquez and his wife Marilith Garcia-Sandoval — who is accused of falsely claiming to own the roofing business — allegedly conspired to mislead insurers in 2014 to purchasing workers’ compensation insurance coverage.
Henriquez is also accused of misleading insurers in 2015 and intentionally under-reporting his number of employees and the actual payroll for his business during a premium audit in March 2016.
Garcia-Sandoval, 35, faces one felony count of insurance fraud and one felony count of conspiracy to commit a crime in conjunction with the case, according to the Enforcement Division. She has not yet been arrested.
Henriquez was arrested in Lee County without incident then transferred to the Gwinnett County Jail, where he remains without bond.
