A clerk who was shot and killed early Monday at a convenience store in DeKalb County was a part-time preacher, his former wife told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The victim, 54-year-old Harry Wells, had been a longtime employee at the Exxon Food Mart in the 4100 block of Memorial Drive, ex-wife Deborah Ann Leach of South DeKalb said.

The family, she said, was making arrangements for Wells’ funeral and declined further comment.

According to the investigation so far, a man walked into the convenience store about 4:30 a.m., pulled out a weapon and fired at the clerk and ran away from the scene, DeKalb Police Capt. Steve Fore told The AJC.

Lt. Rod Bryant said the clerk was shot once in his upper torso, and later died at Grady Memorial Hospital.

“We’re trying to figure out what happened,” Bryant told The AJC. “It’s unknown if this was possibly a robbery attempt or some type of dispute.”

Bryant did not release a description of the suspected gunman. He said detectives were reviewing surveillance video from the store.

The incident was the second shooting of a DeKalb convenience store clerk in less than a week.

On Wednesday, a clerk at a RaceTrac station on Rock Chapel Road was shot in the foot during a predawn robbery.
