A night custodian was found dead inside Martin Luther King Jr. High School in DeKalb County Thursday morning, a district spokesman said.

Investigators initially treated “the situation as a crime scene,” DeKalb schools spokesman Quinn Hudson said. Just before 9:15 a.m., the district said there were no signs of foul play.

It appears the custodian, who had been ill for some time, collapsed at the school and died, the district said. The DeKalb County Medical Examiner’s office identified the custodian as 52-year-old Anthony Jacobs.

Freshmen and sophomores were relocated to Arabia Mountain High School at 6610 Browns Mill Road in Lithonia while authorities continued their investigation. Juniors and seniors were relocated to Southwest DeKalb High School at 2683 Kelley Chapel Road in Decatur.

Buses took students to their assigned schools and parents were permitted to take students there, too.

“Regular dismissal schedule will be in effect this afternoon,” Hudson said.

No other details were released.

King High School is in the 3900 block of Snapfinger Road in Lithonia.
