A burglary suspect was arrested hours after running from police — and leaving a 5-month-old baby in a car, Channel 2 Action News reported.
Lamont Andre Cummings was in the Gwinnett County Detention Center on Thursday night, charged with multiple offenses including burglary and cruelty to children in the third degree, authorities said.
Police said the 34-year-old Cummings was baby-sitting his girlfriend’s daughter when he stole a gun from a Lilburn home Sept. 27. A neighbor saw a man leaving the home on Springdale Drive while carrying a gun case, investigators said.
“I knew that my neighbor didn’t have somebody come pick his rifle up, so I called 911,” neighbor Bill Wannamaiger told Channel 2. He also wrote down the tag number of the suspect’s vehicle.
Lilburn police located Cummings in the Burns Road area, and he got out and ran when they tried to pull him over, they said. The baby was left behind in the back seat, next to the case with the rifle.
Cummings was apprehended hours later at his apartment complex, and police said he later confessed. In addition to the gun, police said they believe he took electronics from the home and pawned them.
Cummings also was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a weapon during a crime, fleeing or attempting to elude, driving while license suspended/revoked, reckless driving, and two counts of obstruction of a law enforcement officer.
According to the Georgia Department of Corrections website, Cummings has been in state prison three times on burglary and other charges. His last release date was in January.
