A Gainesville woman stole a car, taking the victim’s dog along for the ride, officials said.

Deborah Louise Whitehead, 47, turned herself in to face charges of theft Thursday, the Hall County Sheriff’s Office said.

She allegedly broke into an unoccupied house in the 4400 block of Union Church Road late Saturday night or early Sunday morning. Investigators said she left the house and then stole a Hyundai Elantra from a driveway in the 4500 block of Union Place.

The car owner had left it running while he went inside his residence, leaving the dog in the vehicle.

Braselton police recovered the stolen vehicle and dog at a motel Monday morning.

Whitehead is now in the Hall County Jail.
