Police on Thursday said they now know who shot a 6-year-old boy in the chest as he rode his bicycle in Gwinnett County last month.

It was another child, Gwinnett police Cpl. Michele Pihera said.

“After an extensive investigation,” she said, “the lead detective has determined that the shooting was accidental and occurred between the victim and his friend. [The detective] hasn’t yet determined if criminal charges will be filed due to the ages of the parties involved.”

Ni-Shawn Moore was riding his bicycle in front of a home on Caboose Court March 12 when he was shot, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution previously reported.

Police initially thought Ni-Shawn was shot with a BB gun, according to a police report.

It wasn’t until he was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center that a hospital staff member told police the boy was instead shot with a .22-caliber weapon, was in critical condition and needed to be flown to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston.

Ni-Shawn was discharged from Children’s Healthcare days later, Pihera said.

Police released no details about Ni-Shawn’s friend.
