Police in Newnan are seeking those responsible for damaging eight gravesites at Eastview Cemetery, Channel 2 Action News reported.

On Dec. 16, officials discovered the damage, with most of the graves broken at the base, Channel 2 reported.

"That's not something that you want to find when you go to visit a relative,” Newnan police Lt. Tate Washington said.

Officials identified three of the headstones, with dates of birth going back to 1881.

Some headstones were too heavy to turn over, so the occupants’ names are not known.

The plots are private property, so city officials have left each site alone while they investigate the situation.

Jason Thompson visited his father’s grave before Christmas, when he noticed the vandalism. He was sad and angry.

"This is a place they come to remember their loved ones,” he said, “so for them to come and see something like that … This is just heartbreaking.”
