An assistant principal in southeast Georgia was arrested Monday after turning himself in on a sexual assault charge, police said.

Savannah High Assistant Principal Marvin Johnson, 43, allegedly sexually assaulted a 16-year-old Savannah High student, Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan police said in a news release.

The assault, which allegedly occurred off-campus at the end of January, was reported May 1. Johnson is charged with sexual assault by persons with supervisory or disciplinary authority.

He was released on a $5,000 bond about 24 hours after he turned himself in, according to the Chatham County jail.
