Body-camera footage obtained Thursday by Channel 2 Action News shows an officer responding to a domestic disturbance that led to a gun battle.
Stephen Frank Nichols, 46, was in serious condition after Sunday’s shooting, GBI spokeswoman Nelly Miles previously said.
Nichols allegedly fired at an officer, who returned fire and injured him.
Sgt. Jeff Scott was first to respond to the call. After he left the home Sunday afternoon, he headed into the woods to find a suspected aggressor.
A man in the woods, later identified as Nichols, pretended to have seen the suspect run by, the video shows.
Auburn Police Chief Carl Moulder told Channel 2 that, shortly after, the first shot was fired at Scott by Nichols.
“You can see him turn and point the gun at the officer, and the officer immediately ducks to take cover,” Moulder said.
The GBI did not release the video of what the chief described as a “running gun battle,” but Nichols was hit three times.
Moulder said his officer responded appropriately.
“It could have certainly turned out differently without his reacting the way he did and having that guardian angel with him,” the chief told Channel 2.
